DDC Accepting Applications for the 2018 College and Graduate Summer Internship Program

The ten-week program offers future design and construction professionals a behind the scenes look at how DDC builds and maintains New York City’s infrastructure and public buildings

Long Island City, NY – The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announced today that applications are being accepted for the 2018 College and Graduate Summer Internship Program at DDC. The ten-week paid internship program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in architecture, engineering, design and construction in the public sector.

“Our College and Graduate School Summer Internship program presents a unique opportunity for students to get a behind the scenes look at what goes into constructing the City’s public buildings and infrastructure while also teaching them much needed job skills for a global economy and preparing them for a competitive job market,” said DDC Acting Commissioner Ana Barrio.

Thirty-five students will be selected from colleges and universities around the country to become paid summer interns at DDC. The ten-week program is structured for students majoring in engineering, architecture, construction management, urban planning or sustainability design. Students selected for the internship will gain exposure to different career paths in the design and construction fields through a hands-on approach that includes field trips to various DDC projects, seminars and a mentoring relationship with senior level DDC technical staff.

More than 400 interns have graduated from DDC’s College and Graduate Summer Internship Program since 2004. Dudley Saul, Public Buildings’ Construction Project Manager, credits his 2006 internship with giving him the hands-on experience he needed to have a successful career in construction management at DDC.

“Many people, when they see construction happening in their neighborhood or around the City, think the project just popped up overnight, they don’t realize all the planning and design work that goes into that one project. What’s great about the internship at DDC is it helps you understand the process of design and construction and what it takes to build and maintain this City,” said DDC Construction Project Manager Dudley Saul. “The reason I stayed at DDC 12 years after my internship ended is because there is such an interesting variety of construction work that we do here and it offers great hands-on experience for anyone who wants to advance their career.”

DDC’s College and Graduate Summer Internship Program is spearheaded by the Division of Human Resources and Staff Development in conjunction with the Division of Community Partnerships and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Architecture and Mathematics) Initiatives. Students interested in the College and Graduate Summer Internship program can apply online, now through February 23, 2018. The ten-week paid internship begins at DDC’s headquarters in Long Island City on Monday, June 4, 2018 and ends Friday August 10, 2018.
